We were speeding off towards the highway in dead silence. The radio was just static so there was no point in having it on. Daryl and I were both too shocked to even begin a conversation. The night was getting lighter as the sun approached the horizon. Soon it lit up the inside of the truck which revealed that the drivers’ seat was stained a deep crimson. I tried not to look at it by keeping my gaze out the window. We were passing by more fields of wheat and windmills. I had no idea where we were even going, but I knew it was going to be somewhere as safe as possible. Anywhere was safe as long as Daryl was with me.
Even so, I couldn’t help but wish he were Shane instead. Since Lori wasn’t here, I imagined he would be just as protective as Daryl was. I imagined him at my side, giving me that look; the one that made me feel as if the world wasn’t full of mindless zombies. I wanted him next to me holding my hand and telling me everything was going to be alright, even when it clearly wasn’t. I wanted to be next to him in the field where it’d all ended.
But I knew Daryl wouldn’t have let me jump out of the truck and run back. He didn’t even know what had happened there. He didn’t even know how I felt about Shane. Nobody had, except for Rick, Lori and Carl and they were gone too.
I stared out the window, my eyes filled with exhaustion. I was afraid to sleep. I didn’t want to have nightmares about all the people who died. I let my mind wander which caused me to fall into a trance. I wasn’t asleep, but I wasn’t exactly awake either.
The next thing I knew, we had stopped and Daryl was gently shaking me.
“Hey, you okay?” he looked at me with hopeful eyes.
NO! My mind was screaming over and over. “Yeah. I’m fine.” I gave him a fake nod before laying my head back on the hard cold window pane.
“We’ve been driving for a little over an hour.” He said, also laying his head on his window. “I’m tired as hell.” He yawned.
“You go ahead and sleep.” I sat up. “Seriously, you need it. I can keep watch. Nothing will happen that you won’t know about.” I reassured him.
He smiled to the best of his ability and brushed my hand with his before closing his eyes. He sure was tired alright because it seemed as if the minute he closed them he was fast asleep. I stared at him, still unsure about where we’d stopped, but I didn’t care. I had him to thank for saving me, for protecting me. And even though I missed Shane more than anything, I was at least glad that I was not alone.
Thank you so much for reading my Walking Dead Choose Your Own Adventure story! I hope you were happy with the choices you made, and if you’re not then feel free to go back and make some changes! There are 12 endings in all but only one path to get to the “To Be Continued…” ;)
