“I’ll go upstairs with Andrea and Glenn.” I decided it’d be best to be above ground in case the walkers got inside.
“Okay, sounds great, let’s go.” Andrea smiled at me and handed me a rifle from the gunbag. I tried to smile back best I could. She always seemed to have my back when it came to the walkers and defending myself.
As I turned to climb up the stairs, I heard the screen door open and shut as T-Dog and Daryl went outside towards the barn.
We went upstairs to the master bedroom; the room that had the most windows in it. I took a spot to the left of Andrea at a vacant window and we prepared ourselves. I looked to the left at the barn and saw two figures dart from the house towards it. They began to climb the ladder on the side.
“When do you think we should start—” BAM!!! Andrea’s gunshot interrupted Glenn’s question.
“Guess that answers that…” Glenn muttered as he took aim and started to fire.
Andrea was aiming to her left so I turned to see what she was shooting at. To my surprise I saw Daryl scrambling into the barn and look over at us. He nodded and went back inside. I hoped she was shooting at a walker and not trying to kill Daryl again.
I decided maybe it was time to start shooting some walkers. I took a deep breath before peering through the scope. There seemed to be more walkers than I thought. They were scattered across the feild, coming from all directions. I hoped we’d have enough ammo for them all.
I aimed at a walker that seemed to have been a farm girl. She was dressed in jeans and a button down t-shirt but they were both dirty, as if she’s been digging through mud. I felt bad for her; I felt bad for all of them. Walking around without a soul, being a danger to their friends, family, strangers. It was a shame what this world had come to.
I gulped and squeezed the trigger. Bullseye.
I continued to snipe with Andrea and Glenn, actually proud at how much we were helping our group. I saw a crowd of walkers veer off to the barn. T-Dog and Daryl must’ve done something to get their attention.
However, when I began to hear gunshots from downstairs I got scared. I knew those mindless zombies had made it to the place we had just started calling home. We couldn’t lose this place; not after we were just accepted in.
I looked over at Glenn who gave me the look that I was feeling inside. His eyes were wide and his mouth was slightly open.
“C’mon, we’ve gotta keep shooting.” Andrea noticed us staring at each other and nudged me, “You okay?” she asked.
“Not entirely. I just hope we live through this one.” I laughed nervously.
“Same here, hon.” She smiled again which kind of made me uneasy. I don’t know why she was so calm about this situation; it really was no smiling matter.
We continued shooting and reloading as long as we could, until… our ammo was gone.
“Shit.” Andrea sighed.
“Oh no…” I muttered as I pulled the trigger repeatedly and heard only clicks.
Glenn had shot a couple more rounds until his gun ran dry as well.
“Guess we’ve gotta resort to our pistols…” he said as he set the rifle down and pulled out a handgun.
We suddenly heard a loud CRASH! followed by screaming from downstairs and my stomach dropped. Andrea bolted from the window and Glenn and I followed her to the door. Just as we were about to go down the stairs, Rick ran into us and pushed us back up to the second floor.
“Go, go!” he screamed at us and we made no hesitations. We turned around and bolted upstairs, locking ourselves in the same room as before.
“Couldn’t hold ‘em off... there are too many…” Rick was out of breath. “They got both of ‘em. Sonofabitch.” Rick growled.
The door started to shake as walkers banged and slammed on it. Glenn and Rick rushed up to the door and braced it shut.
“I guess this is it, right?” I stifled a cry. “I guess we’re done for. I mean, how are we supposed to make it through this one? And what about T-Dog and Daryl? Are they even alive?”
“I dunno.” Rick replied, sounding like he was giving up as well.
“What about the others? Ya know, in the basement? How are they gonna make it out of there? Our plan wasn’t exactly the greatest now that we’re here.” Andrea said. I gulped, knowing I was the one who had made the final decision and was responsible for all who died tonight.
The door was starting to splinter.
“I’m afraid this might be goodbye.” Rick looked at Andrea and then at me. “I’m sorry.” He said staring into my eyes. I started to cry as I nodded.
The door slammed again, making a hole in it big enough for walker hands to fit through. Rick took out his revolver and began shooting the walkers until he too ran out of bullets. The three of us started to fire with our handguns; we seemed to kill off a handful or two but they just kept coming.
I slumped onto the bed, giving up and preparing to get eaten alive by dozens of walkers. Then I remembered Shane and his smile… I wanted to see him again, and if that meant dying, well then, so be it. I took a deep breath, tears rolled down my cheeks. I heard Rick and Glenn grunting but the walkers moaning drown them out. It was all accompanied by another heart racing sound…
The Door Breaking Loose
A Huge Explosion
