Andrea's Flashback #1

“Hey, look what I found.” Daryl led me to a group of parked cars with people sifting through boxes.

“Who’s that?” a little girl asked.

“Her name is Lin, she needs a group to survive with. Thought we could use an extra hand.”

Daryl left my side to walk over to a camper, leaving me standing there alone, facing a group of people I didn’t know.

“Uhhh, hi.” I said, sheepishly.

“Hi, I’m Carol and this is my daughter, Sophia.” A woman stepped up to me with the girl who had asked who I was.

I smiled at her but stayed put, unsure of where to go.

“You can come sit with us.” Carol said and led me to a truck with blankets in it.

We jumped in the truck's bed and sat down. They had been eating a small lunch, which was now waiting for them.

“Hey, I’m Dale!” I heard a voice above me.

I looked up on top of the camper and saw an older man on it. He had a fishing hat on and some binoculars in his hands. I smiled at him and he returned it. An Asian boy walked up to me, wiping his hands on a rag.

“Glenn.” He held up his right hand.

I shook it, still smiling as friendly as I could.

“We sorta broke down so we’re gathering things as we wait. If you want, you can help.” He suggested as he politely nodded and walked back to the camper.

I didn’t feel like getting up. Carol must’ve noticed my hesitation because she said, “It’s okay, you can sit with us. Are you hungry?”

I nodded so she reached into a bag and took out a sandwich.

“Thanks.” I said and took it.

As I started to eat, I heard noise coming from the RV. Something metal had been dropped and cursing emerged from inside. A black man came out of it, a little angry looking, so I restrained myself from speaking up.

“That’s T-Dog.” Carol muttered to me.

“C’mon, I met someone out there, you should meet her.” I heard Daryl’s voice from within the camper.

It took a moment, but finally a blonde woman peeked out from the doorway, squinting from the sunlight. Daryl treaded behind her then pointed directly at me. Her eyes grew wide as she looked at me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable and nervous; I had no idea why she was staring at me like that.

Daryl whispered something to her which caused her to shake her head and look away. I took a bite out of my sandwich but kept my attention on them. She was talking to Daryl in whispers. She tried to go passed him back into the camper but he blocked her way. He pointed at me again. She let out a huge sigh and turned around to face me. I didn’t wanna meet her now; she seemed to already hate me.

“Hey, I’m Andrea.” She muttered at me, trying not to look directly at me. I swear I could’ve seen tears welling up in her eyes.

“I’m Lin.” I replied. She didn’t smile but rather turned back around and went into the RV.

“What was that all about?” I asked Carol.

“She lost someone.” She answered.

“Oh…” my mind stumbled back to my family, “So have I…” I muttered, and took my last bite from my sandwich.
