The Door Breaks Loose

Crack… crunch… We heard the wood of the door split in two and panic struck all of us. Glenn and Rick ran from the door over towards Andrea and I. We each grabbed the nearest melee weapon we could reach; Rick found a baseball bat, Glenn carried his machete that never left his side, I settled with the hard wooden stock of my rifle, and Andrea had grabbed a metal lamp from the side table drawer next to the bed. They were all good weapons, the only problem being they wouldn’t hold off all the walkers in this tightly closed space. There was no way to jump out of the window without falling into another herd of creatures and spraining or breaking an ankle. We were trapped and we were going to die here.

The door cracked and crunched and splintered some more, but we held our ground. Then all at once, it broke open and at least two dozen undead barreled inside the room. We started bashing them in their heads (except for Glenn who had more of a chance of killing them in one hit), but as I had expected, there were too many of them. As soon as we would attempt to kill one, another would lunge towards us.

As I was backed into a corner hiding behind a table, I heard Andrea scream. I looked over towards the noise and saw her trying to hold off a walker. I couldn’t do anything about it so I turned away and heard her screams turn to gurgling. I didn’t dare look at her.

I then heard shouting from the bathroom that adjoined to the bedroom. Glenn was swinging and slicing away, but I could tell he was running out of energy. His shouts became louder until they faded away. I heard walkers crunching bones and blood squirting in between their teeth.

I had no idea where Rick had gone, but I didn’t hear any screaming from him; maybe he had made it out alive…

I knew my hiding place wasn’t the best so I wasn’t entirely surprised when I heard growls and grunts getting closer. I whimpered and flattened myself to the wall as best I could. It was no good; they had already smelled me and heard my crying. The decayed head of a walker appeared over the edge of the table I was behind and then lunged over it. I screamed and kicked the table away from me, sending it flying back. It had attracted the other’s attention and the remaining walkers looked at me.

I fell back and shut my eyes, preparing to get torn to shreds. Until I felt hands grasp my shoulders. I screamed in fright.

“Go!” a voice shouted at me, “Out the window, go! Get to a car!”

I opened my eyes and looked up. It was Rick and his face was bloody.

“Wh-what about you?” I stuttered in surprise.

He ignored me with a half smile; it wasn’t a happy smile or a sarcastic smile. It was a smile that told me goodbye.

I was about to speak again, but he spun me around and pushed me towards the window. I quickly opened it and turned back only to see Rick knocked to the floor. A walker was on top of him but others had surrounded him as well and were ripping into his flesh. I sat there in shock, wondering why he did what he did until one of the undead saw me. I looked down and lept. Before I knew it I was in midair dropping towards the earth below me.

I landed with a sickening CRACK. My entire left leg felt like it had burst into flames and I felt pain so unimaginable, I couldn’t even think. I looked around me and noticed there were only bodies lying on the ground. Most of the walkers had left for reasons unknown, only a couple stray ones hobbled around the trees. I didn’t know what to do or where to go, and all I could really concentrate on was the shooting pain in my leg.

That’s when I heard a sound that could only be described as pure relief.

“LIN! OVER HERE!”

I searched the field for the voice and finally saw him over by the cars that were parked in front of the house. Daryl was waving at me with both arms. I tried to stand up, but there was no way I could.

“I… I CAN’T!” I shouted back and gestured at my leg.

Next thing I knew, another CRACK rang in my ears behind me. I whipped around and to my horror saw a walker crawling at me, leaving both of its legs behind. I scrambled away as fast as I could. The walker was faster using its arms than I expected. I startled when I backed up into something solid.

“C’mon.” Daryl picked me up from under the arms and hoisted me onto my right leg.

I hobbled and limped towards the cars putting nearly all my weight onto Daryl. He shot a couple of the undead that had seen us and gently put me into the car as fast as he could. I was next to T-Dog and glanced in the rearview mirror to see four others shuddering in the back.

I ignored them, knowing that all of them had at least lost someone they loved. They seemed shaken and were all in tears.

Daryl climbed into the drivers seat and turned the key, starting the engine. We drove off, leaving the farm and our deceased people behind.
